Dear all,
Preparations for the retreat are in full swing and we are now able to share the programme with you. This may be subject to some small changes but the majority of information is now correct and hopefully it will help you with your own planning.
I have also attached a copy of the schedule for the symposium where all Fellows are asked to give a short presentation on their research. This event will be attended by campus staff and external visitors from the wider scientific community aswell as colleagues from Wellcome Head Office and offers opportunity for collaboration and networking aswell.
In order for the tight schedule of the symposium to stick to time would you please be able to send me your powerpoint slides by Friday 21st March so I can upload them and have them ready for you to present on the day.
I hope this information is useful, if you have any questions at all about it please do let me know, otherwise I look forward to meeting you all in March.
Kind regards
Nicky

Dear all,
I am emailing you this afternoon regarding a different piece of work I am involved in which is the Sanger Prize. An annual competition which is aimed at undergraduate students from low and middle income countries. The winner of the prize receives a fully supported three month, all expenses paid trip to Sanger to work within a programme of their choice. The prize was established by John Sulston (the founding Sanger Director) and funded using the money from his Nobel Prize. It has been running for over 15 years now and has gained in popularity during this time, last year we received over 500 applications for the first stage.
The Sanger Prize offers a brilliant opportunity for aspiring young researchers to come to the Institute, and many who have won in the past have gone on to complete PhD's, some in Cambridge and one very recent winner is currently a PhD student at Sanger.
For an insight into how amazing an opportunity the Sanger Prize is for the winners, please check out this recent blog post written about our most recent winner, Dami who spent the summer working in Ewan Harrisons team. https://sangerinstitute.blog/2024/10/22/sanger-prize-the-power-of-persisten…
The Trustees are always keen for the Prize to reach as many eligible people as possible and with your international contacts I would be very grateful if you can forward the information in this email onto any you know who has contacts in low and middle income countries, to encourage as many applications as possible.
Further details and a link to the application form can be found here: https://www.sanger.ac.uk/about/the-sanger-prize-competition-2025/
If you have any queries at all regarding the prize please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards
Nicky

Dear all,
Trevor has asked me to set up a zoom meeting with all our incoming International Fellows, to allow you to all meet each other prior to the retreat and to give you the opportunity to raise any issues you might have and the chance to discuss them.
I have selected some potential dates and times for the meeting, and added them to the DoodlePoll (link below) could you please complete it to let me know your availability. Please note the times are UK times, and I have chosen times in the afternoon in the hope that it will coincide with your working days, bearing in mind the time difference. If this makes it difficult for you to attend please do let me know.

Dear all,
Sarah and I, copied, have been working with our Comms team to promote the International Fellows programme and we are keen to promote our new cohort in particular.
Could you send me a short biography that we can use in these promotions. This only needs to be a couple of paragraphs long, and should describe in summary your career to date. It will be used on our website and intranet so should be suitable for both internal Sanger staff and external public viewing.
I look forward to receiving your biography in due course, meanwhile if you have any questions about this please do let me know Sarah know.
Kind regards
Nicky

Dear all,
I understand that you have recently been offered appointments as International Fellows at the Sanger Institute, congratulations, and we look forward to working with you.
I am working with Trevor Lawley and Sarah Hull on the management of the International Fellows programme and the organisation of the retreat which we hope to organise for early 2025. The retreat will take place on our campus in Cambridge and will bring together you all, as the new cohort of fellows, along with the existing cohort, faculty sponsors and other faculty members. It will be a week of useful events, with networking opportunities for you, along with a chance to visit the campus and Institute.
The dates we are currently looking at the for the retreat are as follows:
Week commencing March 3rd 2025
Week commencing March 10th 2025
Week commencing March 24th 2025
Please could you let me know by return email if any of those dates would not work for you, or if you can currently attend for a week for all of them.
Once the date has been confirmed I will work with you to secure your visa and travel. We have hotel accommodation on site which you will be able to stay in for the duration.
In addition we are working with our comms team to promote the International Fellows programme and with this in mind I would be grateful if you could send me a photograph which you would be happy for us to use in internal and external promotions. Ideally this would be a head and shoulders shot, of high definition. A photograph taken on a phone should be sufficient as long as it is taken in as high as quality as possible.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding the above, and if you have any questions regarding this email please do let me know.
Kind regards
Nicky
