Dear HCA Members,

Welcome to the eleventh Human Cell Atlas newsletter!

We are looking forward to the next HCA General Meeting on June 27-29th 2022! The meeting will focus on integrating communities and atlas building with the Biological Networks, to help map a path towards the first draft of the HCA. We do hope you can join us, either in Vienna or online!

The global HCA community has more than 2,300 members from 83 countries working together to create an open, representative Human Cell Atlas. As part of this effort we are delighted to report on the first HCA Africa Symposium, helping to connect researchers and create further opportunities for collaborative HCA science. We’re looking forward to further global events and engagement this year.

We hope you will enjoy the news from our community, highlighting the great collaborative spirit and the wonderful science that we do together.

Best regards,

The Human Cell Atlas Team

Inaugural Human Cell Atlas Africa Symposium Highlights

The first HCA Africa Symposium took place on 20-22nd March 2022 to raise awareness about HCA in the African scientific community and nucleate groups who can benefit from and contribute to HCA at a regional and global level. More than 135 people from 24 countries joined us virtually for the talks and discussions.

You can watch recordings at YouTube [humancellatlas.us19.list-manage.com] and Bilibili [humancellatlas.us19.list-manage.com].

HCA Website Updates

We are continuing to add and update pages on the HCA website.

HCA Data Portals

The new Data Portals webpage https://www.humancellatlas.org/portals/ [humancellatlas.us19.list-manage.com] highlights single-cell data analysis portals to facilitate the visualization and analysis of HCA data. Each portal has unique features and utilities.

Please add your datasets to all of these portals, and alert us to opportunities to create further HCA-specific data collections.

HCA Data Coordination Platform

Please submit your data to the Data Coordination Platform (DCP). This can include raw sequencing data, or raw and annotated cell-by-gene matrices. The data Wrangler team are available to help.

Submission of managed-access data is also encouraged as matrices can be anonymized even if the raw data is held in managed-access platforms. The DCP team are helping to standardize cell-by-gene matrices so they are accessible by external portals like cellxgene, in order to enable data sharing from live donors.

To date, the Data Coordination Platform [humancellatlas.us19.list-manage.com] hosts data from an estimated 26 million cells. Since January 2022, the DCP has added 5.1 million cells; 42 projects (237 total); 800 donors (3,300 total) and 1,600 samples (11,400 total).

Please join the new #dcp-users [humancellatlas.us19.list-manage.com] Slack channel, to learn when the latest data becomes available in the DCP, and connect with other data users.  You can also talk to the DCP team at the HCA General Meeting, please mail data-help@humancellatlas.org to connect.

Careers in Science: A Panel Discussion

Nearly four dozen early-career scientists joined us on 24th May 2022 to hear experts on scientific publishing, science policy and science philanthropy discuss their career paths and seek advice on preparing for these and other science careers.
