Dear STEM Ambassadors,
Firstly, I’d like to introduce myself as the new Education and Learning Officer in Public Engagement. I’m currently organising a new online school programme for the
year.
Genomics Lite is a new programme of live webinars for upper secondary biology
classes. Running twice a week on Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday after school, pupils will have the chance to hear from and ask questions to scientists from the Wellcome Genome Campus. The programme will cover a new curriculum-linked topic every half term and
will look at the topic in context of cutting edge research, what techniques and equipment are used
in the lab, what the big ethical questions in the field are and what
career pathways scientists have taken. Each topic will be accompanied by pre- and post- session resources to support learning in the classroom and at home.
We’re looking for involvement from staff across the Campus to be involved with our online schools programme! We are looking for live or pre-recorded talk about your
research, what techniques you use in your lab or what your career path has looked like, as well as doing a live Q&A with school groups. All sessions will be hosted by a member of the Public Engagement team and will last under an hour.
The topic for this term (November-December) is the Human Genome Project, as an introduction to the topic and the Campus’ work. The topics we are hoping to explore
in the new year include: cancer; infectious diseases; genome editing; evolution and inheritance; stem cells.
Please get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved, or have any questions or ideas about the programme.
Best wishes,
Em Dixon
