Dear STEM Ambassadors,
Would you like to get more involved in outreach activities with schools? If so, you might want to join our new working group for the Sequencing in a Suitcase project. Sequencing in a Suitcase, developed by Sanger researcher Kim Judge, is a great opportunity for school students to gain first-hand experience of sequencing. You can find out more here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAoK9HJXB_8>.
The working group will be trained on Sequencing in a Suitcase and will work together to develop and run sessions for schools in areas where students don't often get the opportunity to learn about real-world science. The age group for the sessions is 17-18 (A Level or BTECH students).
We are currently looking to run 3 multi-school events in the following locations:
* Kettering - building on the success of the science day organised by Kim Judge
* Norwich - working with a local school academy trust to reach students throughout the region
* Campus - reaching out to some of our local areas that are often overlooked for science enrichment opportunities and bringing them onto campus to participate in the sessions
The format for the events will be a full day, and will cover an introduction to the work our campus does, a Sequencing in a Suitcase session and another activity for students to rotate around to get a feel for the variety of areas we cover here.
Dates for the visits will be arranged around the availability of those in the working group. The public engagement team will be on-hand to support with organising the events.
If you are interested in being part of this working group then please let us know by emailing engage(a)wgc.org.uk<mailto:engage@wgc.org.uk> by Friday 23rd August
In the coming weeks, we will explore setting up working groups for other aspects of public engagement, so please keep an eye on your inbox to see if there's any opportunities that might suit you.
Best wishes,
Public Engagement team

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
We need some extra hands to help with this week's Open Saturday event (17th August). Activities that you can get involved in include leading tours in our interactive Open Lab space, or you can help visitors to extract DNA from fruit or assemble a genome. We can provide any training or support you need to do the activities. Or if you have your own idea for an activity we'd love for you to bring it along!
Open Saturday is a great opportunity to speak with visitors about the campus and the work you do here. It runs from 1-4 pm and we will cover any travel expenses to get you to campus (e.g. taxi, train, mileage).
We'd really appreciate any help, so if you've been thinking that you'd like to get involved in Open Saturday, now is the time! If you'd like to take part, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing engage(a)wgc.org.uk<mailto:engage@wgc.org.uk>
Best wishes,
Public Engagement team

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
You may be aware that management of the STEM Ambassador programme for the campus has changed from ConnectEB to SETPOINT Herts. However, the campus Public Engagement team remains your primary point of contact, so please let us know in the first instance if you have any questions.
SETPOINT Herts have created a system to make it easier for you to record your activities. Once you've done a STEM Ambassador related activity, please fill in this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUN3FYmK6UirqscAqbbBbfHio5CpRUD15….
The SETPOINT team will then upload your activity to the system, so there shouldn't be any need for you to fill in the activity on the STEM Ambassador website.
The Public Engagement team are not notified when you fill in this form or record an activity on the STEM Ambassador website. Therefore, whenever you are planning on doing, or have done, a STEM Ambassador activity, please let us know by emailing us at engage(a)wgc.org.uk<mailto:engage@wgc.org.uk>
If you have any questions or are having any trouble with the form, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best wishes,

Dear STEM ambassadors
We're looking for people to join our group of staff who talk with visitors in Open Lab, our immersive space in the Ogilvie Building where visitors can see the DNA sequencing labs. This is a great opportunity to discuss your work with the public and school students in an informal setting. Your work does not need to involve DNA sequencing as it's an opportunity to explore the breadth of work that happens on campus. We provide training on how to run the AV experience and use the various objects in the room that you can use to help you talk about what you do.
We have regular group visits to campus so this is a great opportunity to develop your skills. You'd just need to spare at least 1 hour per month to be involved. Visits mainly happen during the week but there are occasional opportunities outside of working hours if that suits you better.
If you are interested in being involved please let me know by replying to this email. I'll then arrange some training for everyone who's interested over the next few weeks.
Thank you for your help.
Best wishes
Steve

Hi STEM Ambassadors,
Those of you that still have outstanding actions on your DBS checks may have received an email that suggests you might need to go to Stevenage to get your documents verified. I just wanted to clarify that this isn't the case - you can get your documents verified onsite by the Campus HR team. If you need your documents verified, please let me know and we can arrange a time with the HR team to get this sorted.
One reason for these issues is that the company that runs the STEM Ambassador Hub for Cambridgeshire has changed. It used to be ConnectEB, it's now SETPOINT Herts and it seems some of the DBS documents weren't processed before the switch happened. This may unfortunately mean that some of you will need to get your documents re-verified, even if you got them checked when you were inducted. If this has affected you, you'll receive emails from the DBS service or SETPOINT Herts asking for ID verification.
If you have any questions about DBS checks or any other aspect of STEM Ambassador activity, please let me know via engage(a)wgc.org.uk<mailto:engage@wgc.org.uk> or louise.walker(a)wellcomegenomecampus.org<mailto:louise.walker@wellcomegenomecampus.org>
