Hi Lee,
I’m not sure if this area would be affected by the work, but I wonder if it would be
possible to protect an area around the east end of the little path that runs through the
middle of the wetlands. This is the area immediately west of the far east end that has
just been mown, between the saplings that almost block the path up to where there was a
refuga just south of the path.
This year there have been southern marsh orchids, bee orchids, a wonderful pyramidal
orchid and spotted orchids, including the best I’ve ever seen at nearly two feet tall. Up
until about a month ago there have been lots of baby lizards on the ant hills, whereas the
rest of the wetlands have had hardly any lizards. The two refuga have hosted snakes, mice,
voles, shrews and two baby newts. The area also seems to be favoured by butterflies and
dragonflies, including migrant hawkers that I’d not seen before. Many of the photos that I
uploaded to Lorraine’s Google drive were taken in that area.
Kind Regards
Dr Dave Keating

Subject: [Wetlandscommittee] Pond work
Hi
I just wanted to let you all know that we have scheduled the date of the 2nd November for
contractors to come in and clear some of the vegetation around the large pond in the
wetlands. They will also be removing some of the self-seeded alders and willows which are
starting to encroach on the surrounding area. The company used, will be the same as last
time and they have walked the area with myself and Sarah to see what needs doing.
I wanted to give you all the chance to give me any feedback or ideas about the works which
we need to consider? We will of course, barrier the area off as it will be very muddy and
a site wide email – notifying every one of the works, will be sent out by Jo Slater
Tunstill – who is covering for Sarah.
If you could let me have any comments as soon as possible that would be a great help.
Many thanks
