Dear STEM Ambassadors
Did you know that only 6% of British students enrolled onto STEM related subjects at UK universities are Black? We are launching an exciting new project in January to help change that statistic by supporting Black students to complete a Youth STEMM Award and develop a portfolio of achievements to support their sixth form and university applications.
Find out more<https://fred.wellcomegenomecampus.org/Interact/Pages/Content/Document.aspx?…>
We are looking for a range of campus staff who could get involved in the programme. There are a number of ways to get involved, all of which can be logged as STEM Ambassador hours.
Cohort Coach
In this role you are a STEM champion for the group. Your role is to support and encourage the students from one school to complete different activities to help them achieve their Youth STEMM Award. One suggested way to do this is through a monthly group meeting where students can check in with you and ask questions, you can also use it to highlight possible opportunities for them.
Speaker
Host a talk and Q and A for the programme. Talks can be on your work at the campus and your career. As there are a number of schools involved you may be asked to host the talk several times to ensure that students are able to ask questions live.
Journal or media club host
Host a monthly Book / article / tv / podcast review club for students to discuss science content they have digested. You can set the reading / viewing list and facilitate the discussion.
Online speed networking events - like the scientist speed networking on campus but using zoom break out rooms instead.
One-to-one or small group mentor sessions - for students who want career advice and guidance - the opportunity to have a chat with someone working in STEM.
Interview and CV skills workshop - advice on writing good CVs, personal statements and interview skills.
These are just suggestions if you have your own ideas for activities please let us know. We will be holding a briefing meeting on Friday 11th December at 10:00 to provide more information and to confirm sign ups to the programme. It would be great if you could come along and be part of this exciting new initiative. Please contact us for a link to the meeting.
Best wishes

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
As part of the Cambridge festival in 2021 (Spring 2021), some members of Campus are organising a hackathon. They are currently looking for people to join and be part of the organisation, as well as ideas. Some details on the project:
The hackathon will be open to the general public and anyone can take part.
Participants - We're looking for researchers, technicians or support staff, everyone can get involved. If you want to take part we will find something for you to do, whether you have or haven't done any coding before, it doesn't matter.
Ideas - We need ideas for projects that will be part of the hackathon.
These ideas will centre around four main themes:
- Improving the science we do;
- Improving inclusivity;
- Improving the environment;
- Educational
If you have an idea or would like to be involved, please get in touch with the organisers via email addressing Stephen Inglis at si5(a)sanger.ac.uk or via the public engagement Slack channel.
Best wishes,
Alexandra

Dear STEM Ambassadors
I hope you are well. We are launching an exciting new pilot project, Black STEMM futures which aims to inspire black students (aged 13 -18) to get involved in STEM activities and achieve a Youth STEMM Award. We are looking for STEM ambassadors who would be able to act as a coach or mentor (online) for a small cohort of students (up to 25) from schools across the East of England and London, helping to keep them on track and complete the award.
We are also looking for staff who would like to host different activities for the students to take part in. We will be holding a training session(s) to support ambassadors wanting to get involved with the programme.
The programme will officially start in January. For more information, visit our Fred page:

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
We are looking for one or two wet-lab researchers to speak at a careers about Career Opportunities in Molecular Biology, Genomics and Bioinformatics.
The session is running on Wednesday 25th November 2020, from 11:25-12:25 for Year 10 pupils at Bottisham Village College. Speakers will need to provide a short bio about their work to be sent out to the school before the session, and then will give a talk about their career for around 5 minutes before answering questions from the pupils. There will be a total of 3 or 4 speakers, so you won’t be the only one answering questions!
If you’d like to be involved, please contact Birgit Meldal (bmeldal(a)ebi.ac.uk<mailto:bmeldal@ebi.ac.uk>), or reply to this email.

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
Firstly, I’d like to introduce myself as the new Education and Learning Officer in Public Engagement. I’m currently organising a new online school programme for the year.
Genomics Lite is a new programme of live webinars for upper secondary biology classes. Running twice a week on Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday after school, pupils will have the chance to hear from and ask questions to scientists from the Wellcome Genome Campus. The programme will cover a new curriculum-linked topic every half term and will look at the topic in context of cutting edge research, what techniques and equipment are used in the lab, what the big ethical questions in the field are and what career pathways scientists have taken. Each topic will be accompanied by pre- and post- session resources to support learning in the classroom and at home.
We’re looking for involvement from staff across the Campus to be involved with our online schools programme! We are looking for live or pre-recorded talk about your research, what techniques you use in your lab or what your career path has looked like, as well as doing a live Q&A with school groups. All sessions will be hosted by a member of the Public Engagement team and will last under an hour.
The topic for this term (November-December) is the Human Genome Project, as an introduction to the topic and the Campus’ work. The topics we are hoping to explore in the new year include: cancer; infectious diseases; genome editing; evolution and inheritance; stem cells.
Please get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved, or have any questions or ideas about the programme.
Best wishes,
Em Dixon

I sent a reply, but the cc to "enage(a)wgc.org.uk" bounced. I just
realised it was because that email's meant to be "engage".

Hi Everyone
I hope you are well. We have been sent information about a new initiative for schools. The Skills Service is about to launch a brand new 'Inspire Series' project for schools which focuses on the 'Future Workforce' and which aims to empower young people at a time when they are facing some tough challenges. There is an information meeting on the 7th September 2pm - 3pm, which you might like to attend.
Below are some details about the different initiatives:
Would you be interested in using your volunteering hours as a STEM Ambassador to help with some exciting projects in the coming months:
Future Workforce - Inspire Careers - inspire young people by providing virtual workplace tours, case studies, career options, virtual 'Meet the Professional' videos and lots more.
Digital Innovation - Inspire Your City Open to both Primary and Secondary students aged 7-18. Individual entrants will be put forward to a quarterly judging panel - would you like to be involved?
Sustainability/Circular Economy - Inspire Sustainability The main Challenge will be a 'Solve the Problem' activity using situations from real businesses, who will pitch their problem relating to efficiency, sustainability or the environment to students who will have to choose which business they would like to support.
Automation/Robotics - Inspire Technology - a Resource Pack for schools which focuses on automation and robotics. There are various activities which can be used as the foundation of a lesson plan.
The Arts - Inspire Creativity An exciting opportunity which will link Innovation, English, Music and Performing Arts together in a fun way
Peterborough is one of our areas of focus for outreach as there are relatively high levels of deprivation particularly with children's attainment and low social mobility. If you are interesting in taking part in any of Future Workforce events e.g. providing virtual workplace tours, case studies, career options, virtual 'Meet the Professional' videos, please do let the Public Engagement team know so we can support you in the planning and development of sessions (and also record the great work you are doing).
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THIS SESSION PLEASE REGISTER YOUR ATTENDANCE USING THIS LINK:
