Hi Stem Ambassadors
I hope you are well. We have been asked by a school if we could find a few scientists and technical experts who would be interested in providing a written interview about their job.
The students are creating a magazine for their peers about different possible careers. They are keen to find out about careers which are not the obvious ones (i.e. doctor, lawyer etc). Part of the magazine includes interviews with people who do different jobs. The 'interview' consists of the person answering a short questionnaire.
If you are interested please get in touch and I can send you the questionnaire.
Many thanks

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
The 2020 Connecting Science Public Engagement Prizes close to nominations on Monday.
We have seen some fantastic commitment and engagement activities from STEM Ambassadors this year. Please consider nominating yourself, someone else and/or a team for a prize. We appreciate that many public engagement activities had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. This will be taken into account and, where appropriate, judging will focus on the development, design and creativity of public engagement activities that were unable to take place, as well as the proactivity and innovation shown by the nominee.
It only takes two minutes to nominate yourself or someone<http://www.bit.ly/PEprizes2020> else working at the Wellcome Genome Campus.
There are five prizes available:
* Commitment to Public Engagement: celebrates individual members of staff or students who have demonstrated significant and longstanding commitment to public engagement. One winner will receive £500.
* Public Engagement Innovator: recognises individual members of staff or students who have demonstrated outstanding proactivity or creativity in public engagement. One winner will receive a personal prize of £250 plus a development award of the same amount to be directed towards a public engagement or related professional development activity.
* Public Engagement Advocacy: recognises members of staff or students who have enabled positive change in public engagement through leadership, guidance, practical measures or emotional support. Prize can go to a group or individual. One winning individual will receive £500 or a group will receive £1000.
* Collaboration in Public Engagement: recognises a group of individuals who have worked particularly well together to embed public engagement into their work. One winning group will receive £1000.
* Public Engagement Prize for Technical Staff - Sponsored by the Technician Commitment: open to members of Technical staff across the entire Campus who have undertaken or supported high quality public engagement as part of their work at the Wellcome Genome Campus. One winner will receive a personal prize of £250 plus a Technician Commitment Grant of the same amount to be put towards public engagement or a related professional development activity.
For eligibility guidance and more information on how to nominate yourself or someone else by Monday 15 June, go to www.bit.ly/PEprizes2020<http://bit.ly/PEprizes2020>.

Dear STEM Ambassadors.
To help you share your work with a wider and more diverse group of people we invite you to take part in a short stand-up comedy training session and to perform at a special on-screen comedy event, Bright Club.
Bright Club is the international network of research-based comedy and it's coming to the Wellcome Genome Campus via online video. The session and gig will be hosted by Steve Cross, a stand-up comedian and science communicator who still has a knee injury from playing football on the Genome Campus site when he worked here.
The training takes place on the 9th of June from 3pm-5pm and performances will take place on the evenings of 18th and 24th of June. For participating, please fill in the form here: https://forms.gle/1jPnSiPT5zktp5ow5 [forms.gle]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__forms.gle_1jPnSiPT5zkt…>

Dear STEM ambassadors,
I hope you are all keeping safe and well.
Would you be interested in supporting a bioinformatics project for
secondary school students?
EMBL's ELLS
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__emblog.embl.de_ells_-3F… >
education team are working with a UK teacher who has developed an 8-week
extra-curricular bioinformatics course for her Year 11 and Year 13
(15-18 year old) high school students who are being taught virtually due
to COVID-19.
The course will cover content beyond the biology curriculum encouraging
students to expand their interest by exploring the field of
bioinformatics and current scientific research. Over the first four
weeks students receive a practical introduction to bioinformatics,
including demonstrations of some of the most important open
bioinformatics databases and how to use them. In the second part of the
course, which will run in June, students are asked to explore their own
research question(s) which can be tackled using bioinformatics approaches.
*We are looking for bioinformaticians who would like to support the
research project by submitting project ideas for the students to pick
from.* Things to bear in mind when considering project ideas:
1. The research question should be relevant to current life sciences
research.
2. Students should be able to answer it by reading background literature
and using bioinformatics tools.
3. The research project should take them 12 hours (spread over 4 weeks).
4. Students benefit hugely from engaging with scientists, to add to the
experience for them and to further support their project it would be
great if they could submit questions to you while they are working on
the project or to show you their research outcomes at the end, these
communications would be moderated and co-ordinated by ELLS, the students
would not contact you directly.
Inclusion of a research project has been inspired by BEDROCK
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bioquest.org_bedrock_in… >, a bioinformatics education
forum, if you need some inspiration check out their submitted research
projects <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__bioquest.org_bedrock_p… > for ideas.
If you are interested or would like more information get in touch with
Eva Haas <haas(a)embl.de> at ELLS or Fran Gale
<francesca.gale(a)wellcomegenomecampus.org> of Connecting Science.
If you have a project idea please submit it, using the template
attached, by *10:00* *Monday, 8 June*.
Once fully developed, the plan is to make this course available to other
teachers in Europe. Contributions from anyone submitting a project idea
will be acknowledged when the course is published.
Best wishes

My usual working days are Monday - Wednesday.
Dear STEM Ambassadors,
We hope you are keeping safe and well.
We have had a couple of requests from schools looking for support in continuing to offer science enrichment activities.
Oundle School (near Peterborough) are looking for a 15-30min recording of a presentation as part of their year 12 futures day on the 19th June (with the presentations ideally being sent over on the 12th June).
This could be done by recording a powerpoint with a voice over or over a zoom call with a member of the public engagement team so that the presentation could be recorded with you as a 'floating head' on the screen too.
It would be fantastic if the presentation covered the following:
* A brief overview of genomics and the work at the campus (we have stock slides we can provide if you would like to use them for this)
* Information about who you are and what your job entails
* A bit of a career path for yourself
There is also the option to take part in a live Q&A session over video call on the 19th itself. Timings for this are still to be confirmed and there is no obligation if you can't make the live Q&A session as well.
If you are interested in getting involved with this then please get in touch with us (engage(a)wgc.org.uk<mailto:engage@wgc.org.uk>).
It is a great event with the school involving a number of underserved schools in the area to help make sure more students can have access to this sort of enrichment.
We also wanted to highlight the below opportunity which many of you may have seen in a recent email from the local STEM ambassador hub.
With so many of the Big Bang fairs being cancelled for this term it is great to see some continuing in digital form.
School Name:
West Suffolk College
Full postal address of the venue:
Out Risbygate, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3RL
Teacher Name:
Nadine Payne
Teacher Email:
nadine.payne(a)wsc.ac.uk<mailto:nadine.payne@wsc.ac.uk>
Requirement of STEM Ambassador - details of event:
We were originally organsing the Big Bang STEM fair for Suffolk but since lockdown we have looked at other ways of delivering the experience. We would like to invite ambassadors to join us for a remotely delivered STEM fair to help support students, parents and teachers at this difficult time by engaging them with a day focused on STEM related activities. We are looking to offer a range of workshops (up to 1 hour long) - pre-recorded and Live streamed activities, Quizzes, hands on experiments, talks, careers Q & A and teacher sessions that children, parents and teachers can take part in. We have decided to place the event on a Saturday due to the uncertainty of the schools reopening but we are looking for ambassadors to give 1 workshop within the day so this can suit around everyone's day. The sessions will be put into age appropriate / audience pathways to try and remove clashes of potential interest. These sessions will be booked through eventbrite after which joining instructions will be sent to participants. Advertising will be through schools, press and social media.
Date of Event:
11th July
KS and Year Group of Participants:
KS2, 3, 4 and 5
Number of STEM Ambassadors Required:
As many as possible
Area of preferred expertise:
Engineering, Science and Computing
Start and Finish times:
The day will run from 9:30 - 17:30 but each ambassador would offer 1 session within that day ( 1 hour)
Thanks and Best Wishes,
The Public Engagement Team

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
Unfortunately, due to the fast-changing coronavirus situation, we have had to cancel all public or schools facing activities until mid-June, with immediate effect. We will review the situation in mid-June and a decision on how to proceed will be made then.
The STEM Ambassador fund cannot be used for any activities that are public or schools facing until further notice. If you incurred any expenses before today, you can submit the expense claim to the Public Engagement team by Wednesday and you will be reimbursed. If you cannot submit the form before Wednesday you will still be reimbursed, but it may take longer than usual due to the Campus closure. Please do not spend any further money using the STEM Ambassador fund without contacting us first.
If you have arranged any public or schools facing activities, please take the necessary steps to cancel them.
If you require any support or have any questions at all, please get in touch via engage(a)wgc.org.uk.
We understand it’s difficult to cancel activities that you have worked so hard on. Many thanks for your support and understanding.
Best wishes,

Hi everyone
The public engagement team is hosting a group of year 6 primary school form Sawtry Junior Academy tomorrow and are looking for three or four people who would be willing to do a very short Q and A about their job. The Meet the expert sessions is an opportunity for the students to meet people from a range of STEM backgrounds. In the 30 minute session you will see three groups of students (8 minutes each). You briefly talk about your job (3 minutes) and them the students ask you questions.
There are two sessions 11:00 - 11:30 and 13:00 - 13:30. This is not exclusive to Scientists, we want to highlight everyone who works on campus! This will also contribute to your STEM Ambassador activity log :)
We would be very grateful if you could volunteer for this. Please get in touch if you can help.
Best wishes

Dear STEM Ambassadors,
A few people have mentioned to us recently that they weren’t aware of the STEM Ambassador Fund. The STEM Ambassador fund enables STEM Ambassadors across campus to develop and deliver their own public engagement activities.
Each STEM Ambassador can claim up to £200 before the end of September 2020. The fund can be used to claim for the following items:
* Materials for public engagement activities, for example beads for sequence bracelets, printing stickers.
* Travel to locations where public engagement activities are taking place. This applies only when staff are travelling to the area specifically to undertake public engagement activities
* Venue hire for public engagement activities
* Catering costs for activities
* Travel costs for participants coming to the activities
* Reasonable subsistence costs for any staff involved, but does not include alcohol
* Cost of attending public engagement training
If you have any questions, or would like to use the STEM Ambassador Fund, please fill in the attached application form and send it to engage(a)wgc.org.uk.
For upcoming public engagement opportunities, please check this Google doc<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sg5MkWSza7zEfcUUyB-mBhRfi5d3ywT9pDz…>, which will be updated regularly.
