REMINDER: Biodiversity Working Group - Walk & Talk Session

Dear All, Just a reminder that we had proposed to hold this week's Biodiversity meeting as a "Walk & Talk" session on the Campus for those who can make it. For any external group members wishing to join, please let us know before 10am tomorrow so that we can make sure you are added to the Security visitor system in advance. Re: Sparrowhawks!

Hello, another bit of good news: the spotted flycatchers have made a reappearance two days after my complaining about the lack of breeding success. Yesterday, spotflies were feeding at least three very noisy fledglings in the limes next to stores. They are around again this morning. And, during an impromptu wetlands walk yesterday lunchtime, we saw several sparrowhawks in the Cam bridge/railway area. I now suspect that only one of the birds came back, the one I saw between 3/6 and 18/6, prepared the nest, and its mate didn't show up. I think this was the only pair around this year. Hello All, I just walked along the path near the bridge to the wetlands (52.078072, 0.180483), and came across five sparrowhawks. Three of them were obviously youngsters, huddled together on the ground, practising flying, and falling over a lot. Two birds were hovering around low in the surrounding trees - either more competent youngsters, or more likely the adults. There was also some begging going on, one youngster was faffing with something on the ground (prey?). They eventually moved off along the river towards the bridge. The location is very close to the big beech where they bred last year. I have a number of grainy pictures and videos I can send. Bird survey this week

Hello, Attached the results of my bird survey this week, from Tuesday. A bit windy, but still plenty of birds around. Noteworthy: - 2 little grebe chicks, by now adult-sized but still stripey, on the Wetlands - Spotted flycatcher observed building nest in the usual place, on the pipes of the Morgan data centre - Great Spotted Woodpecker nest in the big G-Block/West Pav oak, chicks getting vocal - Two starlings briefly seen flying, but I haven't seen them foraging on the lawn this year. - No reed or sedge warblers, but reed buntings - Garden warbler - Two possible sightings of kingfisher at bend of the river, but not calling and being elusive (nest site?) - Dead buzzard on the track to the sewage works. Cause of death unknown and probably several days ago. Picture available. - Nuthatch heard briefly but on the Hinxton side, so not recorded. NOTICE TO WETLANDS VISITORS

Dear All, On behalf of Lee Outhwaite (Head Gardener) please be aware of the below: NOTICE TO WETLANDS VISITORS A large willow tree in the wetlands area split and partially fell the week before last - some of you may have already seen it. There are concerns about the stability of the remaining half of the tree, so Eastern Tree Surgery will be on site on May 15th to carry out work to reduce the height of the remaining trunk. The work is expected to take approximately half a day. There are currently no plans to close the footpath, but we kindly ask that all visitors exercise caution in the area until the work is completed. Thank you for your cooperation.
