Hi all,
I did the last common bird census of the year at the Wetlands yesterday morning. I was surprised at how overgrown the Wetlands have become: it is impossible to see into any of the lakes, even the largest is just full of bullrushes. I heard a Moorhen and a Reed Warbler, but wasn't able to see any Coot or Little Grebes. The paths are also overgrown, even along Grassy Lane, where it is difficult to see into the sewage works, especially the reedbed. I saw 23 species of birds, the highlights being a Kingfisher heading upstream under the iron bridge, and a Red Kite. It didn't see any finches (not even Goldfinches) or buntings, nor Spotted Flycatcher or Mistle Thrush (it was only after retiring that I've realised how rare these two species have become; I don't know of a regular site for either). It doesn't look as if any terns have taken to the floating raft at the Campus lake (there are three pairs at Dernford Reservoir, Sawston, one of which has three fledged juveniles).
After the census, I walked down to Hinxton Watermill and back along the railway. Highlights were Marbled White, Holly Blues, Buzzard, 2 Yellowhammers, adult and juvenile Green Woodpeckers (at Lordship Farm), a family of Chiffchaffs by the Ford, Amphibious Bistort, Sneezewort, False Fox Sedge, Musk Mallow, Reed Canary Grass, Vervain, Woolly Thistle and Common Calamint. In one of the fields by the railway, the farmer appears to be growing a mix for gamebirds and there are some odd flowers growing there which I didn't recognize alongside Tansy-leafed Phacelia and Cornflower; I doubt the seed was sourced locally (or even in this country!).

Dear All,
This is a gentle reminder that we will be holding next week's Biodiversity Working Group on Campus, for a 'Walk and Talk' around the grounds with Lee Outhwaite (Head Gardener) and Iain Webb (Wildlife Trust).
If you are able to attend, (whether visitor or staff member), please can you confirm this to: environment(a)wellcomegenomecampus.org<mailto:environment@wellcomegenomecampus.org> (or by reply to this email).
This will support us to ensure visitors are added into our portal for Security access, and that we don't leave any member of staff or visitor behind at the meeting point.
Meeting point:
We will gather on the plaza, just next to the Campus bus stop (across the road from Security Reception, as per the map below).
Please aim to arrive and be parked up in time for a prompt 11am start.
If there are any issues on the day (i.e. you are running late, or get lost etc), my details are highlighted below and will be provided to Security as the contact for this session.
We look forward to hearing from you, and hope to see many of you there for this fun & informative session!

Subject: Biodiversity Meeting postponed
Dear all
Apologies for any inconvenience, but due to availability of group members this week and the busy month for the grounds team ahead of us, we've taken the decision to postpone our Biodiversity meeting tomorrow.
We would also like to take this opportunity to reset the meeting cadence to Bi-monthly on Wednesdays, at 11-12pm, to coincide with Iain's wetlands walks that people may wish to attend afterwards (where scheduled).
An updated series invite for our meetings will follow shortly, and will include all the new dates scheduled for the rest of the year.
For our next meeting, you may remember we suggested holding it on Campus for a 'Walk & Talk' around the grounds and wetlands, to hear more about the work that takes place on site by our teams and the Wildlife Trust. Both Lee and Iain have confirmed we can do this at our next scheduled meeting, which will be held on Wednesday 5th July at 11-12pm; so we hope this gives enough notice for people to be able to make this date, as it will be a lovely opportunity to see what goes on first hand.
Please let us know if you are able to attend on the 5th July so that we can plan for the day, and book any visitors in with Security ahead of the meeting.
We will send out a reminder nearer the time with further details about where to meet, etc.
Thank you, and we hope to see many of you in July.

Dear All,
At our recent Biodiversity Working Group, Neil Rawlings talked about the upcoming annual bird survey and invited people to take part.
Please get in touch directly with Neil at ndr(a)ebi.ac.uk<mailto:ndr@ebi.ac.uk> if you, or your colleagues, would like to support this year's survey.
See below for further information about what the survey entails:
The bird survey is known as a Common Bird Census and is done according to the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) guidelines - There are surveys throughout the breeding season (April to mid-July) which are done approximately ten days apart.
A surveyor plots on the map [see attached example] the location of every bird seen or heard using the two letter BTO code and the symbols which indicate whether the bird is calling, singing, with food, nest building, on a nest, with young, or which direction it is flying.
The maps are sent back to Neil, who will plot all the records for one species on a map and try to work out how many territories there are, and whether breeding was confirmed or not.
Surveys should be done before 9:00 AM or after 6:00 PM when disturbance from dog-walkers and the like is at a minimum, and the birds will be most active.
The core area is the Genome Campus lake, cricket pitch and surrounding areas to the road between Hinxton and Ickleton, the Wetlands and Grassy Lane (the lane that runs from the Wetlands past the sewage works and up to the layby on the A1301).
All a surveyor needs is a map and a pen, though a clip-board helps, and a little knowledge of what common birds look like. It also helps to know calls and songs of common birds, and to know when there is something unusual that requires investigating, for example an unusual call, then trying to see the bird to identify it. A surveyor will need to bring his or her own binoculars. The more surveyors taking part, the fewer visits each will need to do.
