Hi Dave Many thanks for the email. I’m very pleased with the work carried out and the team were very sympathetic to the area…and the orchids. Just to confirm, the reason the path wasn’t reopened on Saturday was because the digger which was hired for the work wasn’t collected until around tea time Friday and until this time, I was unhappy opening the path to the public, although to be fair, people had been ignoring the barriers all week. It is being opened this morning now I know that the area is safe. The muddy areas will remain fenced off for a while, to avoid anyone slipping. The hire company were supposed to collect the digger by Thursday AM at the latest but it took a lot of telephone calls to get it removed on Friday. The grass path has been unaffected by the work, but is still a bit muddy. The west end of the little path through the middle has obviously been pretty chewed up and has been fenced off. There is a tiny bit of damage to the hardpack gravel path where the digger has driven back and forth, but it’s pretty insignificant. At the moment (Saturday lunchtime) the whole site is still fenced off, but people are already ignoring this. I don’t see why the gravel path shouldn’t be reopened now. Photo DSC05367B on the Google drive is the map I sent Lee showing where there were orchids and lizards this year. As you can see from DSC05372 that area has been left completely untouched, so thanks for that Lee, that’s fabulous. Also left untouched is the east end of the lake, DSC05373, which I thought was scheduled for clearance. If you don’t currently have access to the Google drive, you need a Google account and then Lorraine can add you, sorry I can’t. There are lots of photos of wildlife on the wetlands on the drive. Hi I just wanted to let you all know that we have scheduled the date of the 2nd November for contractors to come in and clear some of the vegetation around the large pond in the wetlands. They will also be removing some of the self-seeded alders and willows which are starting to encroach on the surrounding area. The company used, will be the same as last time and they have walked the area with myself and Sarah to see what needs doing. I wanted to give you all the chance to give me any feedback or ideas about the works which we need to consider? We will of course, barrier the area off as it will be very muddy and a site wide email - notifying every one of the works, will be sent out by Jo Slater Tunstill - who is covering for Sarah. Meeting [EXT]

Hello everyone, Sorry about the technical issues, Zoom via the Firefox browser doesn’t seem to work as well as I’d been led to believe. A few comments. Birds I did see a turtle dove feeding on the very south of the wetlands where Andrew had been spreading the seed, so that has worked. I’ve seen the pair on the wires to the west of the land between the wetlands and the campus. They’ve also been in the trees the other side of the railway in Stephanie’s back garden, but I’m not sure if they actually nested there. No sign of them in the last few days. Butterflies Early on there were tortoiseshells, common blues and some orange tips. More recently there have been Biblical numbers of meadow browns, and also many small heaths and skippers. As mentioned quite a few marbled whites, also some gatekeepers, speckled woods, ringlets, commas, red admirals and a few brown argus and peacocks. No painted ladies yet. Oh and of course plenty of small whites. I’m not so up on moths, but in the last couple of days there have been loads of six spot burnet moths. Plants, by which I mean orchids Not a single orchid on the north side since the work was done. There were quite a few bee orchids there in the past, and some pyramidals. Also not a single bee orchid on the far south bank this year, and only a couple of pyramidals. There were, however, quite a few orchids on the south edge of the south pond. Early on a couple of southern marsh orchids, which the muntjaks got. Later quite a few bee orchids on the east side, and some pyramidals on the west, and a spotted in the middle. The best place this year was the little path through between the lakes. As you come from the far side, for me, towards the railway, just after a few saplings that are right on the path, there were bee orchids to the right, then a clump of four spotteds, further to the right in amongst the tall growth was a fabulous spotted orchid, probably close on two feet tall. A little further on, on the left was a fabulous pyramidal orchid that has only just gone over. There were also a couple of southern marsh orchids and spotted orchids further on. I’m not sure if it was the work on the north side, or the very dry May that meant there were no orchids this year. I’m a little concerned that if that centre part gets the same treatment we’ll not see orchids there next year. Sarah, I’ll try to get something put in the Icene about permitted paths and dog fouling. I’m not sure how many people are reading it at the moment though, as it’s on line only. Thanks everyone, and thank you for co-opting me.
